Abstract

This study, carried out as part of a master's project in design, analyzes the role of the designer as a vehicle for social awareness, in the context of the reuse of waste generated by the meat industry, investigating the processes of generation of such waste and its different destinations. With regard to reuse, the present study addressed the natural processes associated with the preparation and handling of bovine intestines in order to be used in non-edible products. In the scope of design, it is possible to use innovative strategies that help to create an integrated cyclical ecosystem, in order to obtain products, whose aim is to facilitate the process of reuse in a sustainable manner and with low environmental impact. It is in this context that the designer intervenes as an innovative agent, capable of creating new uses, in order to contribute to the resolution of one of the current environmental problems: the high and chaotic garbage of plastic material that has transformed ecosystems and caused huge environmental imbalances. In a first phase, the importance and the need to change the approach to the paradigm related to extractive materials was investigated, and information on organic materials was gathered, in a context of circular economy. In a second part it was studied, the physical chemical behavior of the bovine intestine in the laboratory and in conformation tests for different products, and making several prototypes. In the third phase, organic matter was applied to the development of a lighting product taken to the prototype phase. With this study it was possible to demonstrate that design can be used as a catalyst for an effective change of the environmental problem, replacing plastic material traditionally used in this type of products with organic matter with unique properties.
