Abstract

The teaching of Design in Brazil began in the 50's of last century and its growth was slow until the introduction of the Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education of 1996, when there was a significant increase in the number of courses. By 2015 there were already 178 courses working in public and private institutions throughout the country. However, this expressive and rapid increase generated a need for greater control and regulation. In this context, the National Curriculum Guidelines and the National System for the Evaluation of Higher Education (SINAES) were created, in which the indicators of the National Student Performance Examination (ENADE) and Preliminary Course Concept (CPC). The objective of this work was to evaluate the evolution of the Design courses in the first three evaluation cycles of SINAES. The main changes observed in the period analysed were an 18.7% increase in the number of courses in operation, and this increase occurred more significantly in public institutions. From the qualitative point of view, the factor that underwent the greatest change was in relation to the degree of the teachers, especially in doctorates. Based on the analysed data, it was possible to observe that there is a tendency to improve the quality of design courses in Brazil during this period of SINAES.
