Abstract

Over the last few decades Design, Graphic arts and the printing industry has undergone many changes, including developments focused on entirely new innovations, adding significant benefits and bringing printing techniques to a new level. Specifically, the security printing industry is developing new techniques and materials, which are described in this paper, since counterfeiting is a growing global problem that challenges companies, governments and customers. For example, experts say that 10% of world’s drug supply is counterfeit; so, we cannot be sure about the rest (90%), since more and more people buy thought internet and face the problem of non-genuine goods or product. Anti-counterfeiting techniques can ensure the protection of brands- products such as drugs, tobacco, drinks and enable also checking the authenticity of valuable documents, such as licenses, birth certificates, visas, passports etc. For all these applications security printing inks and conductive materials can be used. These special printing inks are classified into magnetic inks, penetrating inks, photochromic inks, metameric inks (color dependent on lighting), luminescent and iridescent (optically variable) inks, fugitive inks (soluble in water or certain solvents), thermochromatic ink (affected by heat or rubbing), etc. For printed electronic devices/RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) applications, conductive inks including silver or carbon-based nanomaterials are applied.
