Abstract


Cultural damming marked by censorship imposed by the military dictatorship in Brazil ended up bringing
great changes to the cultural segment generating a reaction that was called Boca do Lixo. This study aims to
analyze the graphic composition of films covers aimed at finding a pattern associated with the trends that
characterize the phase called "Boca do Lixo" of Brazilian cinema. We try to answer the following research
question: The visual elements in the covers are in line with the objectives of this representative phase of
Brazilian cinema? Therefore, the theoretical reference deals with historical concepts on the stage of the
mouth of trash cinema, its main directors and actors and also the leading illustrators and photographers who
assisted in the production of films. To achieve the objectives, the methodological procedures go through five
stages of analysis: i) define the list of films (select the films of this phase); ii) search the covers of films; iii)
establish criteria for prior organization of the covers; iv) establish the criteria for morphological separation
of visual graphics and analyze the results found, and v) present conclusions and evidences. It is concluded
that the visual elements contained in the covers of the films helped in the three main objectives of this phase
of Brazilian cinema: low-cost production; eroticism and an appealing title. Due to low-cost production, most
of the images were photographs taken from filming, eroticism, highlighted by the visual weight (information
hierarchy) and the appealing title highlighted through the style and application of the fonts.
